ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Six Flags Over Texas has a birthday on Friday.
A $10 million investment and the sweat and labor of 400 construction workers created a 105-acre theme park with themed areas representing the flags that have flown over Texas. 55 years later, Six Flags Over Texas remains the number one paid tourist attraction in the Southwest United States.
“As the anchor of the Arlington Entertainment District, Six Flags Over Texas has become an important part of Texas heritage,” said Park President Steve Martindale. “Many of our guests have grown up with this park and we’re a part of their family. We hope that they will come out the rest of this season and not only enjoy the park, but rekindle their favorite Six Flags memories while creating new ones.”
The park now encompasses 212 acres. Some of the original attractions at Six Flags are still there, including the railroad and the Crazy Horse Saloon.
Admission to Six Flags when it opened on August 5, 1961 was $2.75 for adults, and $2.25 for children.
Parking cost $0.50. Hamburgers were $0.35, and soft drinks were a dime.
To celebrate its 55th birthday, the park is kicking off “Celebration of Thrills.” From Aug. 5-21, visitors can get a commemorative punch card which lists several rides, attractions, and shows. Once they’ve completed the form, the card can be turned in and entered into a drawing for 2017 season passes. Six winners will be chosen and notified on Monday, August 22.
