FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – A Fort Worth police officer has been arrested after a man he shot during an armed prowler call turned out to have a barbecue fork.
Officer Courtney Johnson was indicted Tuesday for aggravated assault by a public servant. Johnson was freed on $25,000 bond and is on restricted duty over last June’s incident.
Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald Senior said Wednesday that Johnson responded to a homeowner’s call about a knife-wielding man pounding on a door.
Fitzgerald, who released patrol car video of the incident, says Johnson ordered Craigory Adams to drop the weapon. Adams, who’s black, dropped what he was holding before being shot in the arm.
An attorney for Johnson says the officer fired unintentionally.
Fitzgerald says race never played a role in the shooting. Johnson is white.
